A garden suspended between sky and sea, where rare botanical species dance to the rhythm of classical music concerts. La Mortella Gardens are much more than a botanical park: they are Lady Walton’s dream come true, an oasis of beauty that combines nature, art and music in perfect harmony.
A story of love and beauty
Created in 1956 by Lady Susana Walton, wife of the famous English composer William Walton, La Mortella Gardens transformed a volcanic stone quarry into what is now considered one of the most beautiful gardens in Italy. Lady Walton’s vision, combined with the genius of landscape architect Russell Page, resulted in a botanical paradise that is spread over several levels, offering breathtaking views of the Gulf of Forio.
A journey through rare plants and architecture
The garden is on two main levels:
– The valley garden, shady and humid, is home to a rich collection of tree ferns, water lilies and tropical plants.
– The hillside garden, sunny and Mediterranean, provides spectacular views of Forio Bay and is home to a varied collection of palms, cycads and yuccas.
Music among the flowers
The musical soul of the garden lives in the Recital Hall, where classical music concerts are held regularly. Here, young musicians perform surrounded by greenery, creating a unique multi-sensory experience.
